Another one of those quick experiments that turned out unexpectedly good. Almost since I first started learning 3D rendering and animation, I've been on the hunt for a quick and easy way to make sci-fi paneling textures. Either procedurally, by making them in Photoshop, or through plugins like Random Flow and Grid Modeler.
I am SO happy to have found this tutorial (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KbNPddQbaDo). I had been messing around with trying to finagle the brick texture into something like this, and it turns out I was actually on the right track with that. I was just a few nodes shy of achieving the goal.
So I played around with it, and added a little trick of my own to the node setup to make lights. I made two vaguely building-shaped models (one rectangular with some bits sticking out, and one a domed cylinder), and geometry node'd a quick city out of them. I do wish I could've gotten it to randomize the textures for each building, but for some reason applying the modifiers just made them all disappear.
Overall, though, I was happy enough with the end result to actually post it.
